“I had, for many years, painted from life – inspired by the landscapes I visited abroad and in Norfolk – but in the late 1950s the art world began to change and I was excited by the work I saw at exhibitions in London. The New York school and abstraction became dominant influences – sculptors embraced colour and painters 3 dimensions; traditional practices were turned on their head.”
